[Seoul Shinmun] Abolition of supplementary investigation powers and frontline investigators giving up their investigative track: the problems facing police investigations

On August 21, Professor Oh Yoon-sung, adviser to Seoksang Law Office and professor of police administration at Soonchunhyang University, gave an interview to the Seoul Shinmun.

Police officers continue to leave frontline investigation units, resigning or giving up their investigative track one after another.

The reasons cited include the excessive workload of investigation units and compensation that does not match the demanding work,

and once the revised Criminal Procedure Act takes effect on October 2 and police powers expand, that burden is expected to grow further.

With investigators leaving and skilled ones hard to secure, the quality of investigations is bound to decline,

and the resulting harm, in Professor Oh's view, will fall squarely on the public.
